RAC offers more than relaxing getaways, we curate unforgettable recreational experiences

About Us

Your Host for Lasting Memories

RAC is family-owned and our mission is to provide unforgettable experiences for every family that visits our properties. As we’ve added quality campgrounds over time, we’ve taken care to develop the full potential of each property, adding campsites, cabins, improvements, amenities and attractions, and building a calendar of events to provide entertainment for the entire family.

Mission Statement

Recreational Adventures Co., the largest franchisee of KOA campgrounds, is committed to providing guests with a fun, quality outdoor experience through superb professional service and superior amenities.

RAC understands that our guests expect and deserve more than just time away from home. By promoting and protecting our collective history, cultural heritage and rich natural environment, RAC creates recreational adventures.

Our History

RAC was founded in 1972 at the Mount Rushmore Resort at Palmer Gulch in South Dakota and maintains its corporate headquarters in nearby Hill City. In its more than 50-year history, RAC has gone from managing that single campground to joining the KOA franchise and operating a portfolio of 19 properties spread across the U.S. from the mountains of West Virginia to the Black Hills of South Dakota to the Washington coast.

Since it opened as a country club in the 1920s, The Mount Rushmore Resort at Palmer Gulch has provided great get-away-from-it-all fun for thousands of vacationers.  Over the years, more cabins were built and golf, horseback riding, picnicking and touring the Black Hills became popular activities for tourists from all over the world.  In 1962, new owners focused on travelers looking for a dude ranching experience.
